Hockey: a fast-paced physical sport. Hockey is most popular in areas of North America. It extends to Canada and can be found in the northern parts of the USA, but extends to the European nations as well. In North America, the National Hockey League (NHL) is the highest level for men’s hockey and the most popular. Ice Hockey is the national winter sport of Canada, where the game enjoys immense popularity.
Hockey in West Michigan is also very popular. Hockey is steeped in its tradition in where it started as early as 1960. The Muskegon Zephyrs, began as a minor professional league that changed names in 1965 to the Muskegon Lumberjacks. In Muskegon the league operated until 1984.
Across the state via the I-96 expressway, the Grand Rapids Owls brought hockey to its small town in 1977. The Owls played in the International Hockey League until 1980. The two teams managed to produce an interest for generations yet to come.
Today the sport of hockey still holds an interest. In 1996, two friends continued the tradition and brought a team back to West Michigan and called them the Grand Rapids Griffins. This collaboration brought the highest prize in the American Hockey League: The Turner Cup.
